What is it like to be a summer intern at FONA?
October 1, 2013
This summer the Confections Team had the wonderful opportunity to teach and guide a future food industry colleague. Jessica was an intern throughout the entire summer; her last week at FONA, we asked her to write a little about her experience with us and what she learned. Here is what she had to say…
My name is Jessica Brand and I am a sophomore at University of Wisconsin- Madison majoring in food science. I was honored to receive the confections applications internship this summer at FONA. Since this was my first work experience with a company focusing in food science, I had no idea what to expect.
I have always wanted to work with food and science, so this opportunity at FONA was exactly what I needed. I had never heard of a flavor company before, so I was very interested in learning about this aspect of the food industry. I could tell that it was going to be a great summer as soon as I got here. Everyone here at FONA is very welcoming and easy to talk to.
My first week here, I was able to see what the daily life as a food scientist at a flavoring company entailed. There are so many different processes and machines that I had to learn about. The amount of steps that go into creating a flavor never crossed my mind, but everyone was willing to help me learn how to work with everything from gummies to hard candy. Any questions I had, they were there to answer!
Working with the confections team and helping them throughout the summer helped to further spark my interest in food science and especially in the confections industry. Thanks to this internship I can see myself enjoying a career in confections. This internship also helped me understand the professional world of food science. I was able to see how companies work together to form a final product. Not only will I be able to take all of my new knowledge back to school with me, but I will be able to utilize my new skills throughout my future careers.
Working in the confections lab has improved my skills of working with others to finish projects and make them a success and will help me succeed in my food science lab courses in the next few years of college. FONA is a wonderful company that really cares about the future success of their interns as well as their employees. I could not have asked for a better company or a better team to work with during my first internship.
